What is hernia?

There is a muscle surrounding a fatty tissue or an organ that is called fascia. When this organ or fatty tissue starts to squeeze out through any space in the fascia, then it results in the hernia. Though hernia is of multiple types, an inguinal hernia is the most common among all groyne hernias.

When a particular muscle or tissue is already weak and excessive pressure is put onto the nearby area of that organ, then a hernia tends to occur. Since hernia is a result of weakened muscles, it also tends to occur with growing age as the body weakens with old age.

Symptoms of hernia

A hernia does not come with specific visible symptoms. It is more like a thing to feel than being seen by eyes. The infected area might be marked by lumps or swelling. The size of the lump tends to increase with increasing pressure, such as while bending or bulging of the muscles around it. The bulging completely disappears while laying down, so the lumps almost become invisible. Coming to the point of feelings and sensations related to hernia, it is marked by significant discomfort and also pain. The organs and muscles around the infected area, also start to pain ending up in a lot of discomforts. Other symptoms of hernia include chest pain, difficulty in swallowing and heartburn are also experienced. As mentioned earlier, the hernia doesn’t come with significant symptoms, at times you might not come to know about hernia unless you go through some medical tests or checkups.

Diagnosis of hernia

Hernia can also be self-diagnosed but usually, people avoid the thought of considering their ongoing hernia-like symptoms due to fear or sometimes also to avoid any medical expenses. That’s where the indulgence of a doctor comes into play. The doctors usually diagnose your hernia by examining the lumps and bulges around the infected area. The doctor will tell you to cough or bend and if the lump size increases while these activities then hernia is diagnosed. But to confirm his examination, he will suggest some tests. Some of the most common tests to diagnose hernia include CT scan, ultrasound and MRI scan of the abdominal region that seems to be most affected. Abdominal ultrasound is the most preferred among the other three tests. This is because it is less expensive, less dramatic i.e. involves less time and has the least side effects. Plus, ultrasound can be easily done without much roaming around the city from one hospital to another.

Why go for an ultrasound for a hernia diagnosis?

Ultrasound has multiple benefits when it comes to diagnosis of hernia, some of which include

  • Inexpensive

Hernia can also be diagnosed by several other techniques and methods but they are highly expensive, not everyone can afford it. But ultrasound is relatively cheaper and can be done at even lower charges at government hospitals.

  • Faster process

The process of ultrasound for the diagnosis of hernia takes less time and can be done easily and quickly. All it involves is the ultrasound procedure and then the reports also do not take much time to reach the patients, unlike most other tests.

  • Accurate

Ultrasound shows you the real image inside the body and covers the surrounding muscles and tissues as well. From the clear picture, no doubt is left regarding the possibility of a hernia. Therefore, if your doctor is in even the slightest of dilemma then he’ll suggest an ultrasound without a second thought.

  • Readily available

The service of ultrasound is readily available in almost all big hospitals of the city. You can go to the nearest one or as you prefer and get the procedure completed within a few hours.
